Main Purpose of the role

The production and analysis of financial information to support management and decision making.  This will enable Aspens to be an efficient, effective and sustainable organisation, able to best provide for our services users and other stakeholders.  Working closely with managers to ensure finance is embedded across the organisation, having regard to the needs of funders and upholding standards of quality.

Key Responsibilities


Budgets and Forecasts

  1. To ensure that budgets and forecasts are in line with Aspens’ financial framework and managed effectively to meet the needs of our Services.
  1. To ensure that all managers are supported in setting budgets and forecasts, ensuring they are accurate and robust.
  1. To understand the budgets and communicate with managers of reasons for any variances to actuals.
  1. To use external data to compare key information on internal and external services to test baseline costs and efficiencies.  Investigate reasons for differences between services and suggest areas for improvements in efficiency where appropriate.

Financial and Processing

  1. To assist in the completion of the annual statutory financial statements, liaising with the external auditors as required.
  1. To make optimum use of IT systems used by the organisation to ensure procedures and reporting are efficient and effective.

      Business Developments

  1. To assist managers in producing financial projections for new services ensuring effective financial models are in place to calculate appropriate fee levels that are based on realistic assumptions.
  1. To regularly monitor and report back on new projects/services ensuring that variances are flagged at an early stage.
  1. Provide costing analysis for departments as required.

Management Accounts

10. Analyse the financial transactions and establish accuracy of postings.

11. To prepare and post monthly accruals and deferrals for all areas of income and expenditure across the organisation, ensuring the accuracy of our financial reporting.

12. To reconcile key control accounts to ensure the completeness and accuracy of financial reporting.

13. To produce accurate monthly management accounts at department level and on a consolidated basis as appropriate for managers, the Executive team and Board.

14. To work proactively with managers in monitoring financial performance of operations and taking corrective action if problems arise.

15. Prepare the first draft of monthly management accounts pack for review by the Finance Director.


16. To assist in any other way that is deemed necessary to improve the financial and business performance of the Company’s services.

Person Specification

  • Experience of preparing and producing management accounts
  • Experience of working effectively as part of a team
  • Experience of working with finance systems, preferably Sage
  • Positive and solutions focussed approach
  • Good Excel skills
  • Ability to look for more efficient ways to approach tasks
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated
  • IT literate.
  • In the latter stages of professional studies, part-qualified/professional level (ACA,ACCA,CIMA).
  • Can travel in the Kent and Sussex area as required.
  • Experience of working with local authorities as clients would be an advantage
